How to use a classic abacus for early maths
The Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Abacus is a hands-on counting tool with 10 rows of 10 brightly coloured beads. For preschoolers, it can make counting, grouping, colour recognition, and simple patterns easier to explore away from a screen.
It is most useful when an adult introduces one idea at a time: count a row together, move a few beads to show “more” and “fewer,” or use groups of beads to discuss simple addition and subtraction. The open-ended design also leaves room for child-led sorting and pattern-making.
- Check the fit: The product is listed for ages 3 and up, but younger children should use it with appropriate supervision.
- Consider the learning stage: It is a physical manipulative rather than a structured lesson system, so activities and explanations will need to come from a parent, carer, or teacher.
- Think about storage: Its wooden frame and 100 beads make it better suited to a dedicated play or learning area than to compact travel.
